Weed in the Loch of Loirston

A weed clearing session had been held last week involving divers, Committee members, and a number of members. Though their efforts were appreciated there is still a significant problem of weed growth in the loch.

The Convenor has received confirmation from Aberdeen University that there are three types of weed in the loch: Canadian pondweed, spiked water milfoil, & another type that they think is curled pondweed. He advised that most of the chemicals that can treat these types of weed, for example, Caseron G, have been withdrawn from the market.

Another Committee member however advised that in his opinion the areas that had been treated in the past with Caseron G did not seem to be any clearer then those that were not.

It was also noted that there had been some discussion on the Forum on possibly introducing coarse fish. Opinions from Committee members were generally unfavourable, for example it was pointed out that grass carp only feed in water above 16 degrees. It was agreed not to pursue this further meantime.

It was agreed that: the Convenor keep trying to identify any chemicals that are available; the Convenor investigate further options of possibly laying a membrane on specific areas to cut out sunlight & prevent weed growth; & that the Convenor & the contractor investigate better methods of cutting the weed using a hand built attachment to the boat similar to a device that appears to work well in marketing material received.
