Competition Results 2009
D.R. Wilson Trophy – Loch of Loirston 26th April |
This is always a very unpredictable competition dependent a lot upon the weather. This year it was very cold with a very strong wind but at the start the anglers were enthusiastic. It soon became apparent that catches were going to be limited, very limited. At the weigh in there was only one single fish, a brown trout of 1lb 6oz. The fortunate angler was Bill Courage who tempted the fish on a white blob, that well established Loirston killing pattern!!
The picture shows some of the less fortunate anglers sharing a joke at Bill’s expense by the look of it.

Adam Junior Trophy – Loch of Loirston 10th May |
With 3 juniors and 4 minors turning up for the 1st junior competition of the year. The day turned out to be a lovely sunny day, but probably a bit too bright in the latter part of the competition for fishing. The competition started off well with Stuart Crockett landing all his fish before 12 and losing just as many. Things quietend down in the 2nd half and proved a bit more difficult for the juniors left trying to make up their catches

Mitchell Shield – Loch of Loirston 24th May |

After the disappointment of the first competition expectation was a lot higher and anglers were all keen to get started.

John Steer Cup – Sun 7th June – Upper Parkhill |
There were very few rising fish to target but the odd one was keen to take, if covered. A couple of sea trout were landed and safely released which is an encouraging sign. Twelve anglers turned up and 12 fish were caught. The most successful angler on the night was Graeme McPherson who managed a commendable four brownies, twice as many as anyone else. The result was as follows:

John Cameron Trophy–Sun 21st June–Upper Fintray |
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
The river had just fallen back from all the recent rain and was running just a little coloured but free of suspended weed. Fish were hard to come by early on and John Stephen was the only one with a fish for a considerable time. Mike Cordiner then picked one up on dry fly followed by Richard with two in quick succession. Similar to last year, Chris McAllister captured a cracker of 3lb 9oz on a small wet fly and Paul was able to tempt a more modest 9oz fish.
At the weigh in everyone expected Chris to be the winner with his single big fish but to everyone’s amazement Kenny Riddell pulled one out of the bag at an astonishing 5lb 8oz caught in the final 15 minutes on a dry fly attached to 2 1/2lb leader. Chris McAllister and Kenny Riddlle's brownies The result was as follows:

McGee Junior Cup - Sun 21st June - Loch of Loriston |
Trout were caught early on and all the youngsters enjoyed their day, Callum Clark being the eventual junior winner with 2 rainbows for 3 ½ lb. Jonathan Petrie and Stuart Crockett finishing up with one fish each. Some of the juniors turned up having fished all night at the Raemoir Fishery competition so all credit to them. Thanks to John Jamieson & and various dads etc for running the event

Presidents Trophy - Sun 12th July - Butterstone Loch |
|||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Trout were caught early on and all the youngsters enjoyed their day, Callum Clark being the eventual junior winner with 2 rainbows for 3 ½ lb. Jonathan Petrie and Stuart Crockett finishing up with one fish each. Some of the juniors turned up having fished all night Butterstone Loch was the venue for the only ‘away’ competition on the calendar and it didn’t disappoint us. Fishing at the start of the day was relatively easy with almost all the anglers getting a few and also losing a lot. As is normally the case the easier fish went off the take due to boat pressure and fishers had to go searching in other areas of the loch to keep on catching. Various methods worked on the day including medium sinking lines up to floaters and flies varied from blobs and boobies to cormorants and crunchers. Fish averaged around 2 ¼ lb with a few reaching the 3lb mark. They were all in good condition and each gave a good account of themselves. The final outcome was quite close with Chris McAllister and Mike Cordiner catching 14 fish but Chris edged it by around 1lb at he weigh in. Kenny finished third with 11 fish to keep him in the lead for the overall Championship. 1st – Chris McAllister Top 6 placings in the club championship

Simpson Plaque - Sun 2nd August - Loch Of Loriston |
||||||||||||||||||||
The loch wasn’t in the best of condition with water clarity at around one foot and weed in almost every area. The hard work carried out by Stuart and his helpers had certainly cleared enough areas to enable the twelve anglers to at least get cast. Fish were caught right from the start but they only seemed interested at the farm side. Ernest MacKay very quickly latched on to a method of nymphs and booby and he had his limit of 6 fish long before anyone else. Ernie (senior) wasn’t far behind as was Paul Toseland who was managing a fish on a regular basis. Other anglers were catching the odd fish and Glenn McHattie lost what looked to be a huge brown trout on a dry fly. There was a huge caenis hatch but it wasn’t the rainbows that were showing interest but instead the now established shoals of roach which were sipping them up. Paul was the only other one to manage his limit but his weight was slightly less than young Ernest who has now won his first senior competition. The final result was as follows: Championship Table after 6 events

Munro Plaque - Sun 16th August - Upper Parkhill |

The river was still running higher due to the recent rainfall but it was reasonably clear and fish were rising throughout the beat. Anglers were well spread out and trout were caught in almost all locations except the top streams which has been less popular the last few years. One thing that did seem to be common was that the trout wouldn’t look at wet flies but were willing to accept dry fly. The majority of the fish caught were stockies, averaging about a pound in weight. The placings were as follows: 1st Kenny Riddell – 6 trout The result has made the Championship quite close for those behind Kenny:

Jordan Cup - Sun 6th September - Loch of Loriston |
||||||||||||||||||||
This competition had to be moved to Loirston at the last minute after the Don was running in spate. Not many of the anglers had been near the loch and therefore it was a bit of guesswork as to where to fish. The water was a little coloured after all the rain but fish were hooked along the farm side. For some reason they all seemed to be throwing the hook or snagging up in the weed. A couple of fish were landed there and also near the disabled access pier but the hot spot turned out to be downwind at the road side shore, quite close in – on the orange blob. These fish were not new stockies and they had been feeding naturally but to them a big ball of fritz was too good to refuse. This tactic worked for a while but as the winds got cooler the fish switched off and for the last hour hardly anything was hooked. The result was very close and it has really made things interesting at the top of the leader board. 1st Ernie MacKay 4 fish The Championship table – top 9 competitors

Jim and Betty Reynolds Trophy - Sat 26th September - Machar Pool |
||||||||||||||||
What are the worst fishing conditions possible whilst fishing the Machar Pool? It certainly became a punishing 4 hours with very little reward. As always a fortunate few were able to break the boredom with a flurry of activity – on three occasions to be precise. Ernie Mackay was the first to land a finnock in the first hour. Mike Cordiner followed about two hours later and finally Paul Toseland also got a finnock with about ten minutes to spare. All fish were carefully released and it resulted in the three anglers finishing as equal 1st and gaining the maximum 8 points. The Championship Table looks very interesting now!!

Last Fling Trophy - Sun 11th October - Loch Of Loriston |
Eleven anglers competed for the last trophy of the season & most had some success on the day with the loch fishing well. Weather conditions were reasonable for October & more or less first cast on the farm side Bill Courage caught the biggest trout of the day, a rainbow trout just short of 6lb. Shortly after this current club champion Kenny Riddell caught his first of three rainbows. Meantime on the road side Richard McHattie quickly followed by Ernie MacKay & his son Ernest were into fish. Paul Toseland later joined them & also caught fish right away. At the weigh-in it was Ernest MacKay who was top rod, a rainbow trout of 4 1/2lb in his bag of five fish. Ernie & Paul had their bag limits of six fish & finished 2nd & 3rd respectively. These results leave everything very tight as far as the Senior Club Championship is concerned. The final results will be announced in due course.
