Competition Results
D.R WILSON TROPHY – Loch of Loirston 15th April.
The loch wasn't in the best of condition for the first competition of the year due to fluctuating water temperatures and algae blooms that had turned the water greenish brown.
This didn't dampen the enthusiasm of the 16 hopeful anglers that left the start point at midday.
It was always going to be testing due to the fact that it was over wintered wiser fish that were being fished for.
In conditions like these it is important to make sure the fish can actually see the flies and a slower retrieve did seem to be the only way to get a response.
A few of the anglers did connect with fish but were unlucky that they didn't hold on.
One of our illegal immigrant roach even made an appearance just to prove their existance!
At the weigh in there were only 2 fortunate anglers, Glen McHattie with a 13 oz brownie and Ernie Mackay with a rainbow of 1 ½ lb.
At least this was an easy one to work out the final placings.
Adam Junior Trophy- Sunday 13 May 2007, 10am- 2pm- Loch of Loirson.
Four juniors & four minors (youngsters under 12 years old) turned up on a damp & overcast morning at the loch. The flat calm conditions revealed quite a few trout rising & junior Stuart Crockett was quick off the mark with one of the 2 rainbows he caught on the fly. A chilly wind developed later on, however this did not deter junior Ernest MacKay catching a cracker of a brown trout of 1lb 9oz, also on the fly. Meanwhile his dad was hitting the wild brownies too, catching 3 all about 7 to 9 inches in quick succession. Only one minor, Kyle Bruce, managed a rainbow trout, while junior Lewis Calderbank also caught a brownie. At the end of the day Stuart Crockett’s 2 were enough to win the competition, one of which was a superb over-wintered rainbow of 2lb 9ozs (see photo). Paul Toseland. |

Loch Fitty – 20th May 2007
All 20 spaces were filled for the only 'away' competition of the year and it was good to see some new faces amongst them.
The loch had been fishing quite hard and with a strong westerly to greet the anglers, a drogue was essential.
Fish came off quite consistantly throughout the day but not in huge numbers.
Richard McHattie and Mike Cordiner had fish early on and some anglers such as Bill Courage and Jason Brown started to get them as the day progressed.
Tactics varied in different areas with some caught on traditional patterns, cats whiskers and cormorants.
There were some very good quality fish among the 37 fish caught with a very healthy average of over 2lb per fish.
The best catch of the day was by Jason Brown which gives him his very first ADAA competition win – well done Jason.
Final result on the day was:
1st Jason Brown – 7 fish for 11lb 13oz
2nd Mike Cordiner – 4 fish for 9lb 8oz
3rd Richard McHattie – 4 fish for 9lb 4oz
4th Keith McHattie – 3 fish for 8lb 13oz
5th Bill Courage – 5 fish for 7lb 4oz.
John Steer Cup - Upper Parkhill 3rd June 2007
A good turnout of 18 on a dull overcast evening. There was quite a cool easterly breeze blowing, stopping a lot of the trout from rising. The anglers were well spread out apart from at the Glebe where there were high expectations.
A few fish were caught early on with Eddie Riddell getting one after his third cast just up from the railway bridge.Mike Cordiner had one in the first ten minutes fishing wets at Cockers before the fish went off the take.Ernie Mackay found some fish half way down Cockers and managed two and lost a couple before they too switched off.
The Top Streams was fished by Chris and Kenny and it was Kenny who patiently fished the dry fly to catch his fish which were mostly wild ones.A few fish were caught at the tail of the Glebe, but it was at the neck of Cockers where Richard found some steady risers to his dry flies. He got a soaking wading out to try and cover them though. The wind died away in the last hour and fish were seen rising almost throughout the beat and a few anglers who had struggled earlier were now managing a fish or two.
The weigh in was an extremely tight affair with only 2 ounces separating the first two and also fourth and fifth spot. The rod average on the night was almost exactly 2 fish per angler.Final placings:
1st Mike Cordiner - 5lb 8oz
2nd Richard McHattie – 5lb 6oz
3rd Kenny Riddell – 4lb 2oz
4th Graeme McPherson – 3lb 2oz
5th Jason Brown – 3lb

John Cameron Trophy - Upper Fintray 17th June
A total of 16 anglers turned up for this one on a mild night that promised a lot but turned out to be one of the worst returns on record.
The beat had been fishing pretty consistantly with some big fish reported in the previous week with a rise of fish coming on at around 10 p.m.
This however didn't materialise and there were only a couple of trout showing on the surface.
All the fish that were caught fell to wet flies but a couple did get hooked and lost on dries.
Result - Rod average 0.25 fish per angler
1st Ernie Mackay – 1 trout (1lb)
2nd Chris McAllister – 1 trout (7oz)
3rd equal Murray Hourston – 1 trout (6oz)
John Stephen – 1 trout (6oz)

McGee Junior Cup 24.6.07
Six juniors & one minor (youngsters under 12 years old) arrived at the loch in the middle of a torrential downpour. Four hours later at the weigh in and it was still raining!
The terrible conditions seemed to suit the worm better, the farm side, being the favourite spot. Jonathan Petrie finished up the winner with two rainbows & a brownie. Lewis Calderbank & Calum Clark had 1 rainbow a piece to finish up runner up & third respectively, with Cameron MacKay also catching a rainbow along the roadshore.
Paul Toseland.
Loirston Junior Shield 8.7.07
This time four juniors & one minor (youngsters under 12 years old) tried their hand at the loch on, for once this year, a dry and warm sunny June day.
There were quite a few trout rising first thing, but they proved very difficult to tempt and once again it was the worm that proved the best method on the day, The Lochinsch farm side being the popular spot for the youngsters.
The winner with a rainbow and a brown trout, the rainbow being a beauty of 2lb exactly, was Lewis Caulderbank. Runner up with another rainbow was Jonathan Petrie. Minor Darren Hewatt was also delighted with his rainbow trout.
Paul Toseland.
Mitchell Shield – Loch of Loirston 22nd July
Only 14 turned up for this one possibly due to the earlier poor weather.
Fish had been seen all round the loch prior to the competition and the anglers were all well spread out from the start.
A few brown trout were caught and returned early on but it was the rainbows that Kenny and Richard were catching near the burn mouth that attracted most attention.
The trout in this area seemed to be feeding heavily on sticklebacks and were seen to be herding the small fish into a corner.
The odd fish was caught from near the pier and opposite at the trees but the main action was within the 10 yard section of the bank beside the burn
Mike eventually got into the hot spot once Richard and Kenny had bagged up and managed three more in the last 20 minutes.
Overall there were 24 fish caught, including one brownie, by the fourteen anglers which equates to an average of 1.7 fish per angler.
Result – 1st Richard McHattie, 2nd Kenny Riddell, 3rd Mike Cordiner, 4th Murray Hourston, 5th Chris McAllister.

Munro Plaque – Upper Parkhill 12th August
Twelve anglers turned up for this one and it should have yielded lots of fish with almost perfect conditions with little wind and plenty of warmth in the air.
From about 6 p.m – 7 p.m. the fish were rising in almost all the areas and it was this period that seen most of the action.
Richard McHattie, fishing the Goval area, was unlucky to be snapped three times on very light leader.
Mike Cordiner managed an early fish on wet fly followed by another to dries up at Cockers and Kenny Riddell managed three out of the Glebe which he had to himself for most of the night.
John Stephen had a single brownie at the top of the beat also returning a 3 ½ lb grilse and Paul Toseland managed a single in the Goval area.
Ernie Mackay caught and returned a 2 ¼ lb sea trout.
Result on the night:
1st Kenny Riddell – 3 brown trout (2 lb 10oz)
2nd Mike Cordiner – 2 brown trout (1lb 15oz)
3rd equal Paul Toseland – 1 brown trout (9oz)
3rd equal John Stephen – 1 brown trout (9oz)

Re-scheduled Simpson Plaque – Upper Parkhill 9th Sept 2007
River was in good condition running at a good height, reasonably clear and there was very little wind with overcast skies.
Trout were rising occasionally but not in any great numbers. Anglers were once again well spread out and able to concentrate on their fishing without too much pressure. Fish were caught on dries early on with F-flies and Klinkhamers featuring on the menu but the trout seemed to be more willing to react to a well presented wet fly as the evening wore on.
Trout were caught in all areas of the beat and no one area really stood out as a hot spot.Keeping on the move and searching new pockets of water turned out to be most successful. In all there were 13 fish caught by nine of the eleven anglers.
The result was as follows:
1st Mike Cordiner – 3 for 1lb 15oz
2nd Chris McAllister – 2 for 1lb 9oz
3rd Richard McHattie – 1 for 1lb 8oz
4th Bill Courage – 1 for 15 oz
5th John Stephen – 1 for 13oz

Jim and Betty Reynolds Ythan Trophy – Machar Pool 15th Sept 2007
This competition had a big part to play in how the Championship was going to be decided.
Reports of very few fish in the Machar prior to the competition meant that fish were going to be hard to catch and so it proved.
After the first hour there had been nothing caught, one fish lost by Bill Courage and only a couple of fish seen on the surface.
Following a move to the opposite bank Kenny Riddell caught and released a sea trout worth two points followed quickly by Richard McHattie who did the same. Ernie Mackay was next also with a sea trout before things went quiet for a spell.
A couple of single finnock were then caught just down from the worming point including one by Kenny which put him in pole position.
After a slow start Mike Cordiner caught two finnock followed by a sea trout estimated at about 3 ½ lb.
Ernie added a second sea trout to his tally with Murray Hourston netting a finnock right at the death.
In all there were 5 sea trout and 6 finnock caught and released.
Final results were as follows:
1st Mike Cordiner – 4 points (3 fish)
2nd Enie Mackay – 4 points (2 fish)
3rd Kenny Riddell – 3 points (2 fish)
4th Richard McHattie – 2 points (1 fish)
5th equal Chris McAllister, Murray Hourston and Paul Toseland 1 point (1 fish)

Last Fling – Re-scheduled to Lower Parkhill 23/09/07
Only 9 anglers for this last one which had to be moved from the Loch of Loirston.
Warm conditions and a moderate upstream wind hinted towards the dry fly rather than the wets.Olives and sedges were on the trout's menu as they have been for a lot of the season. Most of the fishers started at the road bridge and worked their way down. Mike went in at the waterworks and Richard ventured right down to the limit. The majority of the fish were caught on the dry fly but the trout were playing hard to get and only falling for a well presented imitation.
Mike nets his second fish
![[image]](images/photos/compResults_clip_image004.jpg)
The first hour seemed to be the most productive period but Ernie did hook a grilse in the last hour for a brief second and Richard hooked and lost a keepable trout with minute to go. At the weigh in there were 6 anglers with fish with only Ernie's one falling for a wet fly.
Richard stops for a photo
Result
1st Mike Cordiner 3 fish for 2lb 7oz
2nd Bill Courage 2 fish for 1lb 11oz
3rd Jason Brown 1 fish for 1lb 2oz
4th Chris McAllister 1 fish for 11oz
5th Richard McHattie 1 fish for 10oz
